The internet giant also announced the upcoming integration of this technology into many other platforms, but only in the United States.
Google on Wednesday opened its generative artificial intelligence chatbot Bard to 180 countries in English, and announced the japan mobile database integration of this technology into many other platforms, including online search. " We've been primarily an artificial intelligence company for seven years, and we're at a turning point ," Sundar Pichai, the CEO of the California-based company, told thousands of people gathered in his Mountain View amphitheater.
“ For some time now, we’ve been making our products radically more useful through generative AI, following a bold and responsible approach ,” he added. The November release of the ChatGPT interface—designed by the Californian startup OpenAI, primarily funded by Microsoft—launched a frenzied race for generative AI, between exuberant enthusiasm and apocalyptic concerns.
Google responded with its own interface, Bard, which opened to the public at the end of March. On Wednesday, the company announced that the chatbot is now available in English in 180 countries worldwide. The chatbot will soon be able to converse in 40 languages and is expected to become multimedia, meaning it will be able to integrate images into users' questions and responses.
The world's leading digital advertising company also showed how online search will gradually change, with written answers to Internet users' questions above traditional links, and the ability to interact with the interface, for example by asking for clarification.
The Californian group is also developing Bard extensions so that users can communicate with the robot directly from the Maps mapping application, Gmail inbox or the online word processor Docs.
Its cloud business customers are not forgotten, with tools for companies that want to design their own generative AI-based tools (search, chatbots, etc.) for their applications, with their own data.
Concerns
Microsoft recently made similar announcements. The software company had already integrated ChatGPT into its Bing search engine and fully opened it to the general public last week, thus relaunching this portal, which had previously been insignificant compared to Google.
The two competitors are competing with each other through announcements with a stated goal: for their AI-powered platforms to become users' preferred personal assistants.
Google on Wednesday unveiled PaLM 2, the new, more advanced version of its language model, algorithms trained on mountains of data that enable the creation of conversational robots like ChatGPT and Bard.
" This has enabled a lot of improvements in Bard over the past two months, in terms of mathematics, logic, reasoning abilities, and even coding and debugging ," said product director Jack Krawczyk during a press conference. " We're at a fascinating moment where the gap between human imagination and the capabilities of technology is rapidly closing ," he added.
But Silicon Valley's prowess is worrying, especially since OpenAI launched GPT-4 in March, a " large multimedia model (...) as efficient as humans in many professional and academic contexts ."
The startup's boss, Sam Altman, explained that he was working towards so-called " general " artificial intelligence, that is, programs with human-like cognitive abilities.
Since then, many experts have expressed concerns about everything from misinformation to job replacement, even calling for a six-month pause in research.
Geoffrey Hinton, considered one of the founding fathers of AI, said on May 3 that the " existential threat " that AI posed to humanity was " serious and imminent ," during a panel discussion organized by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The computer scientist has just left Google, where he had worked for ten years, " to be able to speak freely about the dangers of AI ," he explained.
